Farm Fly Control
Why do dairy farmers want to control flies?
Both animals and humans are annoyed and suffer from the bites of stable flies. Cattle bunch up to try and protect themselves from these biting flies and farmers wearing shorts soon learn that stable flies love biting them on their ankles.
House flies can get so numerous on dairy farms that you can hear them when you open the barn door and you can have a hard time breathing without getting flies in your mouth. You can see the cows tails swishing non-stop from trying to keep flies away from them. When you’re milking cows these swishing tails are normally hitting you in the face.
All flies can transmit diseases to the dairy cows. These diseases include mastitis, pink-eye, brucellosis, plus streptococci and staphylococci bacterial infections. Sick cows mean reduced milk production and vet bills.
Severe fly infestations can cause reduced milk production as cows stop eating and drinking to concentrate on fighting flies. Many studies point to 10% and higher milk production declines due to flies.
Flies can also transmit bacteria, including salmonella and ecoli, to cows teats and milking containers where these organisms can end up in the farmers milk tank polluting their product. Milk purity is a major goal of the dairy industry and flies don’t fit that image.
Stable fly infestations can cause severe weight retardation in young calves and beef cattle.
Farmers are inspected regularly by local, state, and federal health officials who can take away the dairy farmers’ Grade A license and who don’t like seeing buildings and cattle infested with flies.
A dairy farm infested with flies is a very unsightly place and most dairy farmers take a great deal of pride in their dairies and want them to look presentable. After all, they live at their place of business and certainly don’t want flies moving from their dairy to their house.
