Take The Sting Out Of Summer

Avoiding the sting of summer can be a difficult task. The sting of a bee is one thing. They can only sting one time and will die afterward. The sting of hornets and other wasps is another thing altogether. These species can sting multiple times and will aggressively defend each other and their nesting site. In fact, it is not uncommon for you to begin a conflict with a single wasp or hornet and find yourself in a full-fledged war with hundreds in no time at all. This is because when these little stingers are injured or crushed they give off a scent that alerts the colony to their danger, and having the mob mentality that they do, you will find yourself in a whole heap of trouble in a hurry. The best way to avoid the unpleasant contact of a hornet or another wasp is to avoid them which is often easier said than done.

Certainly knowing the habits of these aggressive creatures is one way to limit your contact with them. First of all, never touch an active nest. These guys are vicious defenders of their home and their clan. Secondly, try to avoid being confused with a source of pollen or food. Avoid perfume, soap, and shampoo that will leave you smelling like a floral arrangement. Thirdly, when you are going to be in an area that you know has an existing nest or in an area that has a high potential of having a nest, be sure to avoid wearing white or yellow clothing and large, floral prints. Wasps and hornets are attracted to these colors and patterns. Also, be careful to keep food and drink sources under wraps as these stinging insects are attracted to those things. Lastly, avoid seeming like a threat to wasps and bees. If you have a wasp or hornet flying about you, stay calm! Do not swat or swing at it or you will discover it has anger management issues first hand. Also, for some reason the smell of human sweat really angers them, so be careful when you are involved in any outdoor activity that causes you to perspire.

When you find those signature paper nests on your home or around your property or if you discover a hornet’s nest in an old log or in the ground, it is time to call in a professional. Even people that are not typically reactive to the venom of wasps can react to multiple stings which makes dealing with a colony very risky business. The trusted professionals here at Adam’s Pest Control have the education, experience, and equipment to safely and effectively eliminate your wasp and hornet colonies.
