How to Get Rid Of Fruit Flies!

Does someone in your family have an amazing talent for letting their room get so messy that you can no longer see the floor? Maybe it’s a teenage son or daughter, or perhaps a sibling. Have you gotten to the point where you’ve just given up? Why bother hounding the person to clean the disaster when it is so much easier to simply close the door and pretend that the room doesn’t exist? Well, while this may work sometimes, it stops working when another issue takes hold. We’re talking about fruit flies.

You open the door and are swarmed by tiny flies, and before you can close it again, a bunch escapes into the hallway. That’s it. It’s all over. There’s nothing you can do… Or is there? Perhaps learning a few things about fruit flies and implementing the following tips will help you to get an infestation under control or, perhaps next time, prevent it from happening in the first place.

About Fruit Flies:

Fruit flies don’t sneak into your home through gaps and cracks in your exterior walls and foundation the way other insects do. These sneaky little critters hitchhike in on fruit in the form of eggs then hatch when the conditions are right. These tiny flies only live for about 30 days, BUT, they multiply like crazy! So it is important to get an infestation under control before they take over your home. Consider the fact that a single female fruit fly can lay hundreds of eggs in her brief lifetime, and each time she lays another batch, they only take about 24 hours to hatch! This means one fruit fly egg that hatches can produce a swarm, seemingly out of nowhere, in just a few days.

If you would rather not have to deal with fruit flies taking over your home, consider these tips:

  • Make a simple fruit fly trap. Using a small jar with holes punched in the lid, mix water, dish soap, vinegar, and sugar and pour the mixture in the jar. This may help reduce the infestation.

  • Make sure your kitchen trash can has a tight fitting lid.

  • Clean all sweet spills promptly.

  • Place all dirty dishes in a sink full of soapy water instead of leaving them in a dry stack.

  • Store all fruit in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
